Jeanne Murphy, PhD, CNM, FACNM, is a Faculty Midwife in the GWMFA and GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and also a full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Nursing in the GW School of Nursing. Prior to joining the George Washington University, Jeanne was a program officer in the Healthcare Delivery and Disparities Research Program at Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. She completed a postdoctoral Cancer Prevention Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, where she designed and conducted research studies on prevention of breast and cervical cancer. Her doctoral dissertation featured a randomized clinical trial of self-collected HPV testing and results counseling as an intervention to improve cervical cancer screening in a group of women living with HIV infection.

Jeanne has practiced clinically as a CNM continually since 1994 in New York City, Baltimore, Loudoun County, VA, and now D.C. She is passionate about physiologic birth and working towards equity in health outcomes for all people. In addition, she cares deeply about educating the next generation of midwives, nurses and physicians in women’s health, providing clinical instruction at GW MFA and GW University Hospital, and didactic instruction at the GW School of Nursing.

Jeanne has special interests in lactation, colposcopy and care of underserved families. She has been a fellow and active member of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) since 1998 and was elected to Fellowship in the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) in 2018. From 2018 - 2020 she served as an elected regional representative to the ACNM Board of Directors. She received her PhD from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, her Midwifery training and MSN from Yale University School of Nursing, her ASN in Nursing from Springfield Technical Community College, and her AB in Comparative Literature from Brown University.
