The George Washington University has tapped Michael K. Rosner, MD, professor of Neurological Surgery, to serve as the interim chair of the GW Department of Neurological Surgery. The department, known for excellence in patient care and for training generations of neurological surgeons, offers state-of-the-art care across the wide spectrum of neurological surgical disorders.
“I am grateful to Dr. Rosner for agreeing to serve in this interim capacity. Having served as the vice chair of the department since 2015 and program director of the residency in Neurological Surgery for the last 18 months, Dr. Rosner knows the department well and will provide valuable, informed leadership during this transitional time,” said Barbara L. Bass, MD, vice president for health affairs, dean of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), and CEO of the GW Medical Faculty Associates (GW MFA). “We thank Dr. Sidawy, Professor and Lewis B. Saltz Chair of the Department of Surgery and the Chief Physician Executive of the GW MFA, for his continued leadership and recent past service as interim chair of Neurological Surgery.”
As interim chair, Rosner will lead the department’s activities as the GW academic health care enterprise continues its journey to pre-eminence as a health care provider in the nation’s capital. As part of the leadership team of the GW MFA and SMHS, Rosner will be responsible for growing the clinical and academic footprint of the department and bolstering the department’s local, national, and global reputation.
Prior to joining the full-time GW faculty in 2015, Rosner held multiple positions at the F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, including serving as Chief of the Neurological Surgery Service from 2006 to 2011 and Integrated Chief of the Neurological Surgery Service from 2011 to 2015. Rosner retired from the U.S. Army in 2015, and was honored to serve our country while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom during his active duty years.
Rosner has received numerous honors and awards; he is a four-time recipient of the General Hayes Award given by Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and he is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. A clinician scientist, he has published research in high-impact journals, authored multiple book chapters, and regularly given scientific presentations at conferences and events, both domestically and internationally.

I have had an incredibly rewarding time working as the vice chair of the department for the past six years, and I look forward to continued partnership with my colleagues as I serve in this new capacity,” said Rosner.
Rosner began serving in the interim chair position on Oct. 7, 2021.
