- How to access medications in case of an emergency or disaster

The GW Pharmacy staff works hard to make sure you get your medications and related services as prescribed.
If there is:
- An emergency for you: we can try to deliver the medication on the same day.
- A natural disaster or emergency in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia area that will not allow us to deliver your medication from our main location: GW will coordinate transfers to outside facilities to make sure you do not miss a single dose.
- An emergency in your area that will make it hard to deliver your medication: Contact GW Pharmacy, your doctors, or go to the local emergency room to get your medications.
- How to check on a prescription status

You can check the status of your prescriptions filled by GW Pharmacy 24 hours a day using MyChart. If you don't have access to MyChart, please call the GW Pharmacy (202-741-3600) during normal business hours and one of our pharmacy technicians would be happy to update you on the status of your prescription, inclusive of insurance status, shipping status, etc.

Please know that whenever financially beneficial to our patients, the GW Pharmacy will institute prescription substitutions (unless specifically stated otherwise by a physician).
- How to obtain medications not available at the pharmacy

The GW Pharmacy will check with other pharmacies in your prescription insurance network that we can transfer your prescription to, and can also work with your doctor to suggest alternative treatment suggestions as clinically appropriate.
- How to handle medication recalls

If a medication is recalled, the pharmacy will follow the FDA or manufacturer directive. We will reach out to you immediately if taking the recalled medicine would be harmful to your health.
- How to dispose of medications

- Take your prescription drugs out of their original containers.
- Mix drugs with an undesirable substance, such as cat litter or used coffee grounds.
- Put the mixture into a disposable container, such as an empty margarine tub, or into a sealable bag.
- Conceal or remove any personal information, including the prescription number, on the empty containers by scratching it off, or covering it with black permanent marker or duct tape.
- Place the sealed container with the mixture and the empty drug containers in the trash.
