Biography

Cathleen Clancy, MD is board certified in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology. She is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences as well as the Associate Medical Director for the National Capital Poison Center. She is also on staff in the Emergency Department at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Dr. Clancy graduated from Yale University in 1982 with a bachelor of science in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. She completed medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1986 and did her postdoctoral training at Yale New Haven Hospital. She then completed subspecialty training in Medical Toxicology at the National Capital Poison Center and was certified by the board of Medical Toxicology in 1994. Additionally, she holds board certifications in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. 

After her toxicology fellowship, she continued her relationship with the National Capital Poison Center as a medical toxicologist and is currently the Associate Medical Director as well as the Medical Toxicology Fellowship Program Director. She is on call for poisoning consultations 24/7 and responsible for staff education and the professional education of area physicians and students. 

She has a special interest in poisonous plants and mushrooms and maintains a poisonous garden in her backyard. She regularly offers tours to the National Capital Poison Center rotators to familiarize them with the poisonous flora that grows in Washington DC. Her publications include the chapter, Electrocardiographic Principles and Techniques to evaluate the Poisoned or Overdosed Patient in Goldfrank’s Toxicologic Emergencies: 6th - 10th editions.
