Andrew "Drew" Matz, MD, MPH serves as an attending physician on the GWUH Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit. He holds the academic rank of assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Prior to his work at GW, Dr. Matz served as an inpatient attending and Medical Director of the Substance Abuse Program at Dominion Hospital, HCA Healthcare in Arlington, Virginia and at the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, Kaiser Permanente in Woodbridge, VA. Dr. Matz received his MD from the University of Virginia. He completed his residency training in adult psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University and fellowship training in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry in the GWU/INOVA-Fairfax Hospital program, where he was recognized for his excellence in teaching.
He received his MPH from Dartmouth College where he researched substance use trends among persons with serious mental illness. Dr. Matz is triple board certified in general adult psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry and addiction medicine. He has published on transplant psychiatry and presented at national conferences on C-L topics. In addition to teaching residents and medical students, Dr. Matz will take weekday and weekend call and provide backup on the C-L service and in the ER as needed.
