Biography

Jeffrey S. Berger, MD, MBA, is board-certified in Anesthesiology. He is the Seymour Alpert Professor of Anesthesiology at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.  He completed his medical degree and residency training in New York where he was affiliated with The University of Rochester School of Medicine and The New York Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center.  After completing his residency in 2005, Dr. Berger became a faculty member at New York University – Langone Medical Center, Tisch Hospital.  He was awarded the prestigious Teacher of the Year award in 2006, and in 2007, he was given a Distinguished Educator honor.

Dr. Berger completed a Masters in Business Administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business with a focus on Management in 2007.  He is actively involved in leadership within the Department as a former Director of the Residency Program and Director of Obstetric Anesthesiology.  At the University level, Dr. Berger served as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official from 2014-2018. In 2016, Dr. Berger was awarded the prestigious Parker Palmer - Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  In 2018, Dr. Berger took over as Interim Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine; he was officially appointed as the Seymour Alpert Chair of the Department in 2020.  Dr. Berger has an expansive vision for the Department in pursuit of the tripartite academic mission.

Dr. Berger has numerous local and national affiliations with anesthesiology societies, including the ASA, SAAA, SEA, SOAP, and DCSA.  He has led numerous teaching and practice management workshops at national forums.  He is currently on the Education Advisory Board for the Association of University Anesthesiologists.

Dr. Berger has published more than 100 works in peer-reviewed journals and books, and has several on-going investigations in the areas of: Resident Education, Regional & Obstetric Anesthesiology, and Practice Management.  He co-authored the McGraw Hill publication, "Anesthesia Core Review: Part I, Basic Exam (2014)," and "Anesthesia Core Review: Part II, Advanced Exam (2016)," to assist residents with preparation for their board certification examinations.  Dr. Berger directed the Comprehensive Review of Anesthesiology, an Oakstone CME Course.  Dr. Berger has been a Visiting Professor at numerous academic institutions, both nationally and internationally, on a myriad of topics.
