Biography

Dr. Manfredi is a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She was born in RI and graduated from Brown University with a BA degree followed by her MD. The US Navy financed her medical education, so she started her career as a US Navy Flight Surgeon and flew with a US Marine Corps EA6 B tactical jammer jet squadron. After her Navy tour she completed an Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts where she continued to fly on the New England Life Flight Helicopter.   

She completed a fellowship in Health and Spirituality at the George Washington Institute for Spirituality and Health, recently became board-certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine after fellowship training and is implementing innovative practices in integrating Palliative Medicine concepts into the care of patients in the ED. 

Dr. Manfredi served as the past national Chair for the American College of Emergency Physicians’ (ACEP) Wellbeing Committee and has served as a member and subcommittee chair for many years. She has also been a member of the Legislative and Regulatory Committee as well as serving as one of the early Board Members of the American Association of Women Emergency Physicians before it was designated a section. Dr. Manfredi was also a facilitator at the ACEP sponsored Wellness Summit where a dozen national medical organizations met to propose a roadmap for the future of wellbeing in Emergency Medicine.   She is editor of the online book: “Being Well in Emergency Medicine- ACEP’s Guide to Investing in Yourself,” and is a member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Wellness Committee.  She presented at “BalancED,” the inaugural emergency medicine conference focusing on well-being in emergency medicine and was co-chair of the 2019 SAEM Consensus Conference on “Wellness for the Future:  Cultural and Systems-Based Challenges and Solutions.”   

In 2020, Dr. Manfredi Received the ACEP Wellness Section’s Outstanding Director of Wellness Award.  Dr. Manfredi’s work in Wellbeing focuses on how the system or organization impacts the wellness of the individual health care provider. 

Together with Dr. Lillian Emlet, Dr. Manfredi was a finalist in the Urgent Matters EM Innovators of the Year contest for EM Talk: Mastering Difficult Discussions in the ED. She is continuing her work in the primary palliative education of emergency providers teaching the skills for rapid goals of care discussions in the ED and other palliative medicine principles.  

In 2021, Dr. Manfredi received ACEP’s Lifetime Achievement Award: The Pamela Benson Trailblazer Award for seminal contributions over time to the growth of the College and to the specialty of emergency medicine.

She has written peer-reviewed articles focusing on well-being and has presented at conferences nationally and internationally. She has also started to publish articles where palliative care concepts are translated into emergency medicine. Dr. Manfredi married a US Marine Corps jet pilot and served as a military spouse. She has 3 children who work in the worlds of non-profit organizations, cinematography, and geographic information systems.
