About our Director, GW Medicine - Executive 360°
Kevin O’Connor, D.O., FAAFP
Dr. Kevin O’Connor is a distinguished physician, military leader, and strategic advisor with over three decades of experience in high-pressure, zero-defect environments. As the 16th Physician to the President and longest-serving White House Physician in U.S. history, he provided direct medical care for the President and Vice President and led medical contingency planning domestically and across 80+ countries.
A retired U.S. Army Colonel, Dr. O’Connor served as a Master Flight Surgeon, Command Surgeon, and advisor to elite military units, including the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, the 75th Ranger Regiment, and the 82nd Airborne Division. He was deployed on numerous classified combat missions, playing a pivotal role in pioneering many battlefield medical innovations and advancements.
Dr. O’Connor has contributed meaningfully to the medical literature. Most of his publications focus on “Care Under Fire” or “Point of Wounding” tactical medicine. He is a plank holder of the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC).
Beyond his operational roles, Dr. O’Connor is a recognized leader in Executive Medicine. After serving 22 years of active duty in the Army, he retired in 2017 and established roots at the George Washington University. He served as Founding Director of Executive Medicine at George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates as well as Medical Director for the George Washington University Hospital’s International Patient Program, where he advised on international and diplomatic healthcare initiatives. In 2021, he returned to the White House, selected as 16 Physician to the President. He returns now to GW Medicine and remains an Associate Professor at the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences, committed to mentoring future medical leaders. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. O’Connor showcased an exceptional range of expertise, excelling in clinical practice, academia, leadership, and operational roles.
A renowned speaker, Dr. O’Connor is a highly sought-after Commencement and Keynote presenter, celebrated for his distinctive blend of humor and keen insight that perfectly aligns with his subject matter. A masterful Irish storyteller, he captivates audiences with his wit, warmth, and wisdom. He has been featured on Sirius XM Doctor Radio, and national professional forums. He holds numerous honors, including the United States Secret Service Director’s Award, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Presidential Citation, the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians (USAFP) Family Physician of the Year, the Army Surgeon General’s “A” Proficiency Award, St. Bonaventure University’s prestigious Gaudete Medal, and the Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (AMOPS) Robert Lutz, DO Award for exemplary lifetime service in military medicine. He was recently admitted into AMOPS’ “Conclave of Eagles.”
Dr. O’Connor lives in Maryland with his wife of 29 years. They are the proud parents of three talented, kind, and lovely adult daughters.
